My Little Laura: Popcorn and Milk
We’ve been reading Abby the Little House on the Prairie books for quite a while now. We’re currently in The Long Winter. Tom told me that the other night Abby smacked herself on the forehead and moaned, “Oh NOOOOO, not *another* Blizzard!!!” She’s learning a lot about forced simplicity, and the meaning of true hard work.
I found a beat up copy of My Little House Cookbook at Goodwill a long while back. Abby likes to open it up and stare longingly at the pictures. She’s been begging me for weeks to make “Popcorn and Milk” like Almanzo’s in Farmer Boy. I just didn’t think she’d like it and I hate to waste food.
But, I should totally know better. If Laura and Almanzo like it, she’ll be darned if she won’t like it too.
It’s actually kind of a cool experiment:
- Fill one cup with popcorn and another cup the same size with milk.
- Drop popcorn kernels one at a time into the milk. You’ll be able to fit a whole cup of popcorn into a full cup of milk!
- Then, eat the soggy popcorn with a spoon and drink the milk.
That last step didn’t sound too good to me, but she’s all about it. Witness:

Honestly? It sounds disgusting!
But I guess there’s something to “you can’t say you don’t like it until you’ve tried it”…
You’ll note, Anna, that I did *not* try it myself! ;)
I’ve been banging my head against the wall this winter and crying “Oh NOOOOO, not *another* Blizzard!!!” myself. :)
I remember reading the Little house books as a kid over and over. I had the boxed set. And what I would have given for a copy of that cookbook. I always wondered what the food actually tasted like and what it would be like to make it!
Shana, your winter sounds about as extreme on the cold/snow end as ours has been on the warm/sun end of the spectrum. Ugh. The book has about 10 recipes in it. . . we’ll likely make our way through them all. . . wish you were closer so you could come over for a cup of cambric tea! ♥
A couple of questions before proceeding with the experiment myself: Is the popcorn salted? Is it buttered (which for some reason would remind me of a story about Yak butter tea…as told in the book Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle by Dervla Murphy) and finally, yellow or white kernel?
Oh Laura, I love that you need more specifics! So, the book suggested you salt *or* sugar the popcorn. We went with a little salt and no butter (I popped it in oil though, so there was that added flavor). And, we used yellow kernel. Sounds like you have a lot of options for further experimentation! Enjoy!
Oh my!!! This sounds like something Isaac would LOVE. He is always mixing his beverages and food together. Lately it’s been oatmeal in his tea. I imagine it would taste kind of similar. GROSS! :) Thanks for the idea.
OMG we have the same book!!! My kid is a little house on the prairie fan. A really big one! I wouldn’t try that stuff those. Ick.
Oh, and thanks for the chin hair advice. ‘Just pluck it and go’
*though
I meant I wouldn’t try that stuff though
dude. you made your own corn pops. rad.
A few years ago my neighbor and I were talking about snacks, she told me about popcorn & milk, she butters & salts her popcorn & drops a handfull at a time in the milk and eats it with a spoon…. I said ‘YUCK’ ….she said dont knock it till you try it!! Well, being very curious I tried it,and I have to say that I love it & have it for a snack quite often.
My daughter and I just did the popcorn & milk experiment, as we are reading Farmer Boy in our homeschool. So fun! I ate the popcorn and drank the milk…tasted like puffed cereal in milk, lol.
oh, and i want to add that since this quarter of home school is about early america, there is a lot of corn in the lessons, LOL. last month we made hasty pudding, which is corn meal and milk cooked together. i thought it would be horrendous gruel. it turned out to be so delicious that i make it often! – boil 2 cups milk, add 1/2 cup corn meal, cook and stir 5 mintues, til thick. add butter and salt. SO GOOD.
