This is what self-care looks like (for me)

February 22, 2011
  • Some time in front of my blue light.
  • Good coffee.
  • A news fast.  The devastation in Christchurch, Somali pirates, Wisconsin, Libya . . . all of it.  I just need a break before I curl into a little ball and cry.
  • Putting the scale way out of reach. . . the numbers it tells me don’t make me feel very good about myself, but the way my jeans are fitting does, so THERE.
  • A short wog (walk/jog), and being okay with the shortness of it
  • Turning off facebook and reaching out to friends who are here in real life.  (It’s amazing what a cup of coffee with a pal or a hug can do for my mental well-being).
  • Eating half a Costco sized bag of pirates booty with my husband (because, that’s much more healthy than eating half a Costco sized bag of pirates booty and chasing it with a bottle of wine).
  • Watching the season premiere of the Amazing Race, then episodes of 30Rock and Modern Family that we missed while away with my husband.
  • Watching the icy snow fall down and bounce off the roof of the house next to ours.
  • Snuggle the kid.
  • Leave the dishes, laundry, chores for a different time.
  • Look up recipes on my new favorite recipe website.
  • Avoiding certain music today.  As much as I love Radiohead, Bon Iver, and others, it’s just not good music for me when I’m already feeling down.
  • Listen to certain music that makes me feel good:

Right there with ya chica! This is one fabulous list and really puts thing in perspective. It makes me want to put one together too -but perhaps another day. I feel like procrastinating all to-do lists and household annoyances today and really, I have no motivation to do otherwise. We’ve no snow here, but I hear in town they’re getting it -happy days to you my dear!

Reentry is rough, isn’t it? The real world really sucks sometimes.

And Florence + The Machine? LOVE IT. I end up dancing around the living room, much to the horror of my cat (I think she takes it as proof that I’m as nuts as she thinks I am).

I’m glad you’re doing what you need to do to take care of yourself. Consider yourself long-distance hugged. :)

I love you! I never thought I’d miss my “normal” on this trip, but I ache for it today. Unfortunately, your cycle comes with you on vacation so I’m feeling antsy, tired, and HUGELY missing my little one. Oh, and the tears are just right there on the surface. Buggah. I need to walk it off with you and get my head in the game. Enormous hug, sweet lady. Take care of you.
