Getting kids to do good

January 22, 2012

My local paper was kind enough to publish another article that I wrote. This one is about raising service-minded kids.  You can read the article by clicking on the pdf below.

Here’s a teaser:

Raising service-minded kids starts with how we live our day to day lives and how we treat others. Children definitely do what we do and not always what we say. So, whatever you choose to do with your kids, the most important thing is to do something, anything that makes this world even a tiny bit better.

LOVED this. I couldn’t agree more. I haven’t been as involved with this as I would like…because of Isaac’s sensory issues – I’m terrified of a disaster. :) We started with hosting the CSA last year and that was GREAT. We will certainly do it again if they want us. He was really involved in that and loved it. We’ve also contacted the local food back to see if we can volunteer as a family and like your article suggests…in the summer, do all the produce stuff. We are surrounded by farms (our city is…I’m not personally, how awesome would THAT be?) and many of them donate all windfall apples…or the strawberry farm down the road donated like 5 or 10 acres of their land to the food bank…they just need pickers. This is something we can easily do. AND…given that we stay home for Christmas….it has always been my plan to volunteer for a couple hours on that day as well, to serve lunch or dinner to those who aren’t as fortunate as we are. What a great way for our kids to reach out to their community and help those in need AND get an understanding of how not everyone is as fortunate as we are.

Okay…my ramble is done. Thanks for sharing this with us. You always inspire me in all that you do. Love you muchly. <3
