About

Hello There!

This is me, Carrie.

Thanks for checking out my little corner of the blogosphere.  I started Rhubarb Sky January 1st, 2008. (There are posts from before then that were from an earlier blog that I imported over here).

I am a mama, wife, educator, artist, knitter, activist, cook, loudmouth (not necessarily in that order).

I enjoy making things with my own two hands, hiking, yoga, red wine, good food, reading, writing, playing, and being with good friends.

My husband, Tom’s, work with an amazing environmental education center is what brought us to our amazing small town in 2002, and his continued work with THIS aquarium is what’s keeping us here now in 2011.  Among lots of other amazing feats, he had a massive (benign) tumor removed from his brain in July of 2007. It comes up in my posts from time to time. You can find out a bit more by going here, herehere and mostly here.   He’s doing really well, has been back to work full time since the fall of 2007, and was told by his rock-star neuro-surgeon in May, 2011 that his brain looks as healthy as any 38 year old brain he’s looked at!  If anything, he’s even more fun now than he was pre-tumor!

Our kiddo, Abby, was born Feb. 13th, 2005 (which makes her 6 10/12 now, in December 2011).  She’s our light, our joy and our complete source of humor.  She’s a talented musician, beat-boxer, yogi, stand-up comedian, mathematicianmagician and hard-core sand player.  That’s pretty cool stuff for being less than 7 years old!

I have been writing the newsletter for our CSA every week of the growing season since September of 2006. That’s why you’ll find lots of recipes on this blog. I focus on foods that use the vegetables that are in season where I live and that my kid will eat! ;)

Your comments and e-mails mean a ton to me.  I always try to visit your blog or e-mail back after you come on by.  Thank you for taking time from your day to visit!

A few weeks ago you mentioned how you dislike radishes. Me too until i found a great way to use them. i saute them and the spice disappears. so they are my replacement for water chestnuts. not quite the same texture but works for me.

also, i have found an easy way to deal with greens. rather than messing with them when i get my crate of vegies, i wash a bunch througout the week and either chop them or not and store in a large-mouthed quart or gallon glass jar. they keep much better that way and i can see what i have to use. The plastic bags can sometimes start the decay process too fast. i also don’t have to dry them as the wet leaves aren’t a problem in glass.
